What modem can I use with the DiscoverNET SIM-only plans?

Huawei B315

Huawei B525

Huawei B593

At present the only 4G modems capable of providing full speed access to our network are the Huawei B525 (our current model) or the previous models – Huawei B315 and B593.

If you don’t have a compatible modem, check out our Open Term or Contract Plans which include a new modem that’s yours to keep.

Are all models of the compatible modems certain to work with the DiscoverNET SIMs on the SIM-only plans?
Unfortunately due to the way the network is locked to a range of IMEI numbers that were issued to the compatible modems, we can’t be certain that every modem will work.  If it was originally bought in New Zealand, there’s a decent likelihood.  But if it doesn’t, we’ve got some options to get you up and running.
What happens if my modem is incompatible with the DiscoverNET mobile SIM on the SIM-only plan?
Don’t worry.  If your modem turns out to be incompatible and you aren’t able to connect to our service we’ll give you the choice of upgrading to one of our plans that include a brand new modem, or you can cancel the plan without penalty.
Will my connection work in my bach, hotel or holiday home?
Probably! DiscoverNET Broadband is available in most holiday spots including Omaha, Hahei, Queenstown, Wanaka, Whangamata, Kapiti, Taupo… The list goes on! To find out if you can get DiscoverNET Broadband at your location, check out our Coverage Checker. If you’re looking for a permanent solution for your bach, you may want to install a fixed antenna to improve coverage.  Check out our range of antennas here.
How can you offer so much more data than I get on my mobile?
DiscoverNET Mobile Broadband is especially designed for use in vehicles or from fixed locations. We wanted to recognise that you still want to browse like normal when you go away, but your usual mobile contract isn’t up to the task.
Can I use my own router or modem?
Due to network restrictions our SIMs will only work in a limited range of modems.  At present the only 4G modems capable of providing full speed access to our network are the Huawei B315 (our current model) or the previous Huawei B593. If you have a compatible modem you can buy a SIM only plan here.  Please note that due to restrictions between the IMEI number of your modem and the hardware locks on our SIM cards, we cannot guarantee that a SIM will work on your own device.  If you are unable to connect using your SIM, you will have the option of returning the SIM to us or upgrading to a plan with a modem. If you have an alternative router that you would like to use for your local network, you can usually achieve this by connecting the LAN output of the Huawei router to the WAN port of your own equipment. Note: in case you need technical support, we’ll try our best to help but we can’t guarantee complete troubleshooting support for routers not obtained through DiscoverNET. There are many router brands and models in the market, each with their own individual features and we may not be familiar with your particular router’s specifications.
How do I check whether I can get signal?
Wondering whether you can receive internet where you’re planning on going? All you have to do is to visit the Coverage Checker page . You can see the coverage at 3G and 4G speeds, and see what difference and antenna could make to your coverage. If coverage is available, you can check our plans here.

Using DiscoverNET

How hard is it to set up the equipment?
If you’re just using the modem, it’s really quick and easy! Just plug in the modem, follow the instructions that came in the box and you’ll be up and running in approximately 5 minutes. If you’re using an external antenna, it can be really easy if you’re using a magnetic base (just slap it on and pass the cable through a window).  If you’re using a fixed base, you’re probably going to need some time.
How fast is DiscoverNET Wireless Broadband?
DiscoverNET Wireless Broadband uses Vodafone’s superfast 4G rural network. So you can expect a solid broadband connection that is similar to a 4G connection. The quality of your connection will depend on your signal strength which is affected by interference from things like concrete buildings, hills and valleys. In short, it will be slightly different for every customer.
Do you throttle data or apply any speed restrictions on connections?
No, we don’t put any speed restrictions on DiscoverNET Wireless Broadband. You will receive the best possible speed we can provide at any point in time.
How do I check my data usage?

You can check your current data usage by logging into your account and selecting the “Check Usage” option.

When does my usage reset?

Usage runs from the 14th of each month to the 13th of the next. Please note, that this may not align with the date your subscription payment renews.

So, for example, if you start your contract on the 4th of June you would have a full month’s data allowance to use before 13th June and then another month’s data allowance to use from 14th June to 13th July.  Your second subscription payment would come out on 4th July.
